Invocation: (Matthew 28:19)
We gather for worship in the name of the one who sends us into the world. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
1st Candle “Hope” Romans 5:3b-5 pew Bible p.917
We know that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
2nd Candle “Peace” Philippians 4:6-7 pew Bible p.955
6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
3rd Candle “Joy” 3 John 1:3-4 pew Bible p.993
3 I was overjoyed when some of the friends arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely how you walk in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
4th Candle “Love” 1 John 4:7-8 pew Bible p.991
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Offertory Hymn: ELW #300 “The First Noel” (sung while offering is received)
Glory to God! In the greatest act of giving, you present the world with a Savior, a great light that shines for a people who had walked in darkness! As we celebrate and receive this gift of your Son born to us, remind us that we respond by carrying your light and offering our humble gifts to bless the world. Grant that we, and the gifts we offer, shine light in the darkness, bring warmth from the cold, fill the hungry with good things, and share your love to those who have not heard. Send us out to share the transforming miracle of Christmas, that you loved and blessed an undeserving and dying world that there may be hope and new life. We go out as your apostles to do the same, in your name we pray dear Jesus. Amen.
Prayers of the People (…Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.)
You are invited to stand.
Candles are lit by tilting the unlit candle to light from a lit one.
hymn: ELW #281 “Silent Night” (hum until all candles are lit, all verses)
Prayer for Illumination: (while candles are being lit)
God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul. Guide us, into your light through the birth of your Son Jesus. Send your Holy Spirit, that we may see your light in us and others, find freedom and release through your truth, and discover peace as you light the way for us to follow your gracious will. Amen.
After singing all verses of Silent Night, raise your candles.
As you raise your candles may this be a sign of hope and remind you that Jesus entered the world to shine the light of God’s love to all. You are called and baptized in God’s name to shine the light of Christ throughout the world. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to God our Creator. Amen.
You may extinguish your candles.
Go in the light of God’s love prepared for you, sharing peace with those you meet, and celebrating the blessing of God’s gifts this day and every day. Amen.
Hymn: ELW #267 “Joy to the World”
Go in peace. Christ is with you.
Thanks be to God. Merry Christmas!
